I found a school list from the 1961-1962 school year. Our school system at that time only had 20 schools. What surprised me is how many of those schools are no longer used by LCPS anymore.
The list of schools (all schools elementary schools unless noted otherwise. Middle schools first appeared in the county in 1971.):
Aldie, Arcola (1), Ashburn, Bluemont, Hamilton, Hillsboro, Leesburg, Lincoln, Lovettsville, Lucketts, Middleburg, Purcellville, Round Hill, Sterling, Waterford, Loudoun County High School, Banneker, Carver, Douglass, Douglass High School
Aldie, Hamilton, Lincoln, Middleburg, Waterford, LCHS, and Banneker are the only schools still operating as schools. That's 7/20, or 35%.
A few schools are still owned by LCPS, yet have closed as schools. Round Hill is now a support facility. Ashburn ES is now the Staff Training Center. Douglass ES had been a support facility before it was demolished. Douglass HS is now an alternative high school for LCPS, as well as shared by Parks and Rec as a community center.
And...the list of schools that are no longer LCPS:
Arcola is currently not being used for anything.
Bluemont School is now a community center
Hillsboro School is now a community center
Leesburg (the now-former North Street School Board Annex building) is currently being converted into a senior center
Lovettsville is now a community center
Lucketts is now a community center
Purcellville is now a community center
Sterling used to be a community center, but I believe it is now usually empty (It's the Community Center Annex building), yet still owned by Parks and Rec
Carver is now a community/senior center
That's the rest of them. Most of them closed before 1971. Ironically, LCPS built enough new schools in the 60's that the 1970 school building count was 22.
